Not a Rug-in-a-Box

Today I took some time to visit Deanne Fitzpatrick's Hooking Rugs Web site. I am speechless!

Before I took in images of her lovely custom hook rug pieces, my idea of latch hook rugs centered on the old painted canvas parrot kit I had years ago. It consisted of a color coded canvas and various bundles of colored yarn pieces — and a latch hook tool with a natural wood handle.

Much like a paint-by-number set, I worked on that rug piece by piece for months, until one night in tenth grade I decided to stay up all night and finish it as a gift to my mother. After I hooked my last piece of yarn I was quite pleased with myself.

I haven't been interested in hook rugs since completing that parrot. I'm not much into 'filling in the colors' of pre-made art. However, my idea of hook rugs have totally changed since being exposed to Deanne's art today. What detail, what art, what uniqueness! And they are one of a kind!

Deanne, you are a fantastic artist. And, your choice of canvas is most fascinating! •
