Inner Diablog: A Creative Journey

How to Draw a Clam by Joy Sikorski

Internetworking with Author Joy Sikorski

It was only a year ago that I wrote about one of my favorite whimsical book authors, Joy Sikorski. At the time Joy was just a distant creative icon I admired — mostly because her work humored me, and I appreciated the authenticity oozing from the pages of her books.

Now, almost exactly one year later, I'm looking at the two autographed books she sent me and am in the final stages of finishing up the second part of a feature she collaborated with me on for the Creativity Portal: The Art and Creativity of Joy Sikorski.

Now who would have thought THAT would happen?

This great ending of a story all began with me requesting some extra "clam" money for her How to Draw a Clam book from her Web site. The invitation was there just for the asking. So I did.

One thing led to another, and the next thing I knew, Joy agreed to let me interview her and share some of her drawing lessons on the Creativity Portal. I truly feel honored to be able to inspire visitors of the Creativity Portal with her work.

My experience with Joy reinforced the thought that even "famous" authors and artists are just people like you and me. Their success comes from focusing their energy on what they love — putting forth the needed effort to meet goals and get the job done. They appreciate recognition and praise, and are willing to network with others to "grow" their business.

A year ago I would have never guessed that I would have the privilege of being in touch with a published author in this capacity. Joy is a wonderful person, and I thank her for allowing the Creativity Portal to bask a little bit in her spotlight. •
