Persisting Themes in this NewZine
By Chris Dunmire, Publisher
What does it mean to persist? One definition is "to go on resolutely or stubbornly in spite of difficulties." So when we face challenges in our creative lives, from having a hard time learning a new skill to receiving a rejection letter from a publisher (or anything else), we can respond in one of two ways: carry on (persist) or give up. Yes, giving up is an option.
If you are interested in seeing where the path of persistence may lead you, however, these particular features may infuse you with new energy and help solidify your will to carry on:
1. An excerpt (The Big Lie) from best-selling author Peter Clothier's new book "Persist: In Praise of the Creative Spirit in a World Gone Mad with Commerce."
2. Writing coach Dave Duggins' response to a publisher-rejected writer declaring, "I quit."
3. The interview with Shadow Muse revealing the gifts and treasures found only in the dark side.
Exploring the 'New Wisdom' of Doodling
Ever wonder if doodling in your notebook during department meetings or class lectures serves you well? The April 2010 issue of Oprah magazine features an article by Melinda Wenner ("Imperfect Harmony") discussing the upsides to some common "bad behaviors" like anger, procrastination, gossip, and...doodling. Wenner charts both the "old thinking" and "new wisdom" of each behavior based on research showing how these qualities may benefit us after all.

The Big Lie ("Persist" Excerpt)
By Peter Clothier
Here’s the story: I had just lost my job, the third in a multi-year succession of academic positions of increasing status and responsibility. I had been, to be utterly honest, pretty much kicked out, as I had been from my two previous jobs. I had refused to conform to academic standards and expectations. I had published poetry, for God’s sake, rather than scholarly articles. More »
Peter Clothier writes chiefly about art and artists in Southern California. He has published widely in national magazines, and is the author of David Hockney in the Abbeville Modern Masters series. A former academic, now twenty years in recovery, he is currently a full-time free-lance writer. This excerpt if from his new book Persist: In Praise of the Creative Spirit in a World Gone Mad with Commerce (Parami Press, 2010). |

"I give up writing. I quit."
By Dave Duggins
Sorry, but that's not allowed here. That's not an option. I'll give everyone and their mother permission to write, but I will not give one person anywhere permission to give up.
