Like the domesticated camel and llama, the alpaca is classified as a camelid. These social animals live in family groups, have cleaner hygiene habits than most farm animals, and are often raised for their fleece, a natural silky fiber used for making warm clothes. Each year in September alpaca farmers in the United States open up their farms to visitors for National Alpaca Farm Day to experience first-hand the gentle nature of these teddy-bear like creatures. The following photos are of several male and female alpacas taken on an alpaca farm.
