Creativity in Motion : K-5 Lesson Plan – Cookie Monster Running Game

Moving Creatively in the Classroom (PE)

Cookie Monster Recess Running Game

By Michele Batz, PhD

If you are looking for a quick and easy game for recess time, have I got the game for you! It’s called Cookie Monster — you pick one student to be the cookie monster and have them go to an area about 25-40 yards away from the group. They can turn around, so their back is to your class.

Instruct your class to slowly and very quietly (plus as sneaky as they could possible be) say the following statement: “Hey, Cookie Monster are you hungry?”

After they make that statement, they are to creep towards the cookie monster, who is standing away from them, with his/her back turned to them. They stop (usually after 4 to 5 steps — plus the anticipation is great!) and repeat the question: “Hey, Cookie Monster are you hungry?”, then creep again towards the cookie monster.

The cookie monster will make up their own mind when to turn around and chase the students back to the beginning. Whoever the cookie monster tags will be the cookie monster for the next round.

Fun game to play! •
