"Nothing revives the past so completely as a smell that was once associated with it." —Vladimir Nabokov

ClayMarney Makridakis, author of a Hop, Skip, Jump Hop, Skip, Jump: 75 Ways to Playfully Manifest a Meaningful Life, shares a fun fact about a favorite toy many had growing up:

In 2006, a Play-Doh fragrance was created in celebration of Play-Doh's fiftieth anniversary. According to Hasbro, the special fragrance was 'meant for highly creative people, who seek a whimsical scent reminiscent of their childhood.'

Scentsational Prompts

Triggers You Love

ClayMakridakis wonders, "What scents remind you of playful moments in your childhood?" And, "How might you reconnect with those scents in your life today?"

Use Makridakis' questions to prompt you into time travel. List the scents that trigger fun childhood memories. Where do they come from? What were you doing when you encountered them?

For example, the fall scent of sticks and leaves burning during yard clean-up takes me back to summer nights at our family's favorite camping spot. We'd spend weeks of summer vacation at Woodhaven Lakes in Sublette, Illinois, in togetherness as a family.

Swimming and hiking during the day, lakefront movies at dusk. Then, we'd gather around a campfire as a family when the stars dotted the blackened sky and make s'more's and just talk about everything.

These are the best childhood memories I have of my family. I love driving through the fall leaf-burning season because all it takes is one moment and I am lifted out of my work-a-day world back into my wonder-filled childhood camping. I love these memories!
